Melanie Sartori is a painter and muralist. Born fully blind in one eye, she became fascinated by the visual world at an early age, picking up a paintbrush at five.

Throughout her twenties she worked a 9 – 5 by day and painted by night, refining her style and exhibiting in community spaces.

After completing her first public mural two years ago, Melanie shifted into full-time art and has since created more than 30 murals across the Midwest.

Over the past year, her focus has turned to presenting her newest body of work at respected juried art fairs, including six in Chicago, Penrod in Indianapolis, and St. James Court in Louisville.

Developed just last winter, her current series is made by painting sheer layers of acrylic paint over gold metal-leafed canvas — a technique that lights up the colors, and silhouettes them in low lighting.

The aha” behind this style emerged after years of exploration. Grateful for the vision she has, Melanie takes in each scene with heightened appreciation and is inspired by each place she visits.

In 2022, a trip to Paris and Venice made her influenced by Byzantine art — and gave her a desire to make it more fun. She serendipitously found a book on a remote hiking trail, which showcased floral arrangements through the ages. This led to being inspired by flowers’ past frequent presence in everyday life — and the idea that we could probably still use more of them today. Years later, she began to do mural work in vintage floral styles in her own personal style, influenced by elements of both art deco and art nouveau design.

She adds in a twist of zen brushwork that is also a nod to the decorative arts — all with a modern spin.

She is thrilled to share her work with the One of a Kind Holiday Show audience!
