Marie Parmer creates abstract paintings using acrylic paint, often combined with charcoal, ink, pastels, and collage elements. She builds multi-layered compositions on wooden panels, frequently incorporating an orbital sander to produce unique textures that reveal glimpses of history beneath the surface. Her process is a balance between deliberate, thoughtful composition and spontaneous, intuitive mark-making.
“For me, the process of painting is both grounding and empowering. I love creating something from nothing, bringing something wholly my own to life from a blank surface. The freedom of being in nature inspires me, so landscapes and waterscapes influence much of my work.
My paintings explore the idea of connection — connection to a memory, a favorite place, or an emotion — not necessarily as it looked, but how it felt. When a painting sparks something in someone else, it creates a magical feeling of connection. My hope is that each piece becomes a mirror for the viewer’s own experience, sparking a connection that is uniquely theirs.”
Marie holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. After graduating, she enjoyed a long and fulfilling career in graphic design before returning to painting. Her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions at galleries throughout Michigan, and she also exhibits at the Ann Arbor Art Fair, Krasl Art Fair on the Bluff, Art Birmingham, and other juried art fairs.
