Cassandra Scanlon Studio
Contemporary ceramics, accessories and home decor
Cassandra Scanlon is a ceramic artist in Chicago, Illinois. Inspired by traditional and contemporary forms, she creates functional objects with wonder, simplicity, and comfort using wheel throwing, hand-building, and slip casting techniques.
She explores Neriage pottery in stoneware to create finishes inspired by the natural ephemeral colors and textures found in the land, sky, and sea. She feels the Neriage technique allows each piece to be unique despite the repetition of the making process on the wheel. It captures the impression of the maker in clay and can be a reflection or embodiment of time and memory. She is also pursuing larger hybrid forms with detailed surfaces, fibers and elements of molten glass.
Cassandra holds a BFA in Fashion Design from the Illinois Institute of Art and an MDes in Designed Objects from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago. Previously, she had a longstanding career in technical design and product development in the apparel and homeware industries in New York City.
