Abstract acrylic paintings on canvas

Lake Forest, Illinois

Lori McLaughlin’s contemporary abstract paintings are inspired by the open road” — by the sense of exploration and awakening that is felt when we drive away from our usual routines and settled understandings and enter new territory. Often there is a sense of yet-to-be explored space in her paintings. Her work prompts the viewer to consider their own world in a new palette — to see beyond the expected, to take new paths, consider new understandings, and embrace a sense of wonder and new views.

A classically trained, lifelong student of art, Lori McLaughlin studied formally throughout her childhood and then at the University of Wisconsin-Madison studio art program. Many years as a pastel and pen and ink artist provided the foundational skills that currently appear in the layered color work and varied brushstroke found in her contemporary abstract paintings. Seventeen years working for, and listening to, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra deepened Lori’s approach to her painting, finding relatable approaches to artistic expression between the musical and visual arts.

Lori currently lives and works out of her studio in Lake Forest, Illinois. Her paintings are found in private collections nationally. She regularly appears in juried art shows throughout the midwest. Notably, Lori was honored to have her artwork shown in a unique art endeavor and partnership atop Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming in 2022. As Lori is fond of imparting…Art is Everywhere!
