Get to Know... Amy Zwikel

03 . 15 . 2017

Fiber artist Amy Zwikel is inspired by patterns, nature and the actual craft itself.  Everything is natural, neutral and full of texture.

One of a Kind:  What will you be bringing to the Spring show?

Amy:  I will be bringing unique macrame wall hangings of various sizes and complexities.  Plant hangers, pillows and other home decor as well.

One of a Kind:  How did you get started with macrame?

Amy:  I've always been an artist and I have an eclectic artistic background ranging from a BFA in Industrial Design to an MAT in Art Education.  About a year and a half ago, I found myself working a lot on the computer doing photography and graphic design.  I needed a hands on outlet and discovered macrame.  Its relaxing, meditative process rejuvenates and inspires me.

One of a Kind:  If you weren't an artist what would you be?

Amy:  I'd be a lawyer.  I love problem solving and working through situations.

One of a Kind:  Describe your best vacation ever.

Amy:  After my first year teaching high school art, I took a 4-week trip to Europe.  The first week I explored Paris on my own and met other adventurers from Brazil and Europe alike.  The second week I stayed in a hamlet in the French Alps with 20 other artists and teachers.  We created artwork all day and bonded over wine and games at night.  The third week I lounged and strolled through the Monet, Van Gogh and Cezanne French towns.  The final week I zipped all over Spain enjoying amazing beaches, museums and architecture.

One of a Kind: Finally it's Spring.  What do you like most about this season?

Amy:  The weather really makes me come alive!  I love riding my bike on the lake path, feeling the breeze at home and dining al fresco around the city.

One of a Kind: Cubs, White Sox or other?

Amy:  Either one! Cubs because I live on the North side.  Sox because my parents are from the South side.
