Fashion, New to One of a Kind, Woman-Owned
Kate Beck New Orleans
Original textiles / wearable art
A stick, a stone, a leaf, a song, I pull inspiration for my designs from nature and the world around me.
Individual pieces are created using a combination of the traditional Japanese techniques of shibori resist dyeing combined with hand painting, felting and silk screened and block printing.
The entire process is a search for unique beauty with the techniques providing magical and some unexpected outcomes- a conversation between process, materials, and sometimes about how much chlorine is in the water that day.
Embracing the processes in this way , I delight in the end result of richly patterned and textured fabrics which I make into my original contemporary yet classic wearables- always one of a kind.
Kate studied Textile Science and Fiber Arts at University of Washington 1979 – 1984
Started showing at Arts and Craft Shows 1989 in Seattle and ended up settling in New Orleans in 2002 at her studio in the Marigny
