J. Emmett (he/they) Artist Statement: I am a multi-disciplinarian artist whose work aims to articulate beauty as an inherent quality in all things as a means to honor life and to challenge our society’s beauty and value standards. For me, there is a direct parallel between honoring the beauty of the material I work with and the process of bringing something into form to that of honoring all life. I believe that if something exists it is of value and therefore each body; regardless of the body (a trans/non-binary body, a women identified body, human body, animal body, earth body, celestial body, cellular body, etc) is then deserving of our attention and consideration. I believe that a sightline aligned with the observation and acknowledgement of a form’s inherent beauty diminishes the desire to restrict, control, or harm that body, subsequently honoring the right to bodily autonomy in all forms. My work is personal, political and spiritual and I aim to articulate a heartbeat in my pieces while stripping away the preciousness of my work. Connection is at the center of everything I do and the concept of beauty as a birthright is what I offer. 2 Fun Facts: I am looking for personal and collective liberation and some of my best friends are dogs.
