One of a Kind:  Describe your work.

Ann:  Modern. Sophisticated.  Unexpected.  My collections are inspired by nature but not in the literal sense.  I use shapes and textures I see in nature and combine them with sensual chains.  Part fashion, part art.  I love working in sterling silver, bronze and gold.  Each metal has its own unique quality and beauty too.  Diamonds and sapphires are added for glamour and sparkle.

One of a Kind:  What are you bringing to the Spring Show?

Ann:  My newest collection, Bubbles, will debut at the show.  It's a combination of organic shapes, tiny bubbles and chain to create some really interesting pieces.  After moving to Seattle I saw a lot of rain.  But rain and raindrops can be so beautiful.  I love to watch how the drops form on leaves or make a pattern on rocks.  This is the inspiration for Bubbles. 

One of a Kind:  How did you get started?

Ann:  My journey began when I took at metalsmithing class at Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago.  I was a corporate girl who was very disenchanted with her  professional career so I decided to take a class.  And I was hooked after my first class.  Making something from a sheet of metal was so thrilling!  And soldering-- so exhilarating!  (I think I'm a pyromaniac at heart!)  After some time, a dear friend decided to host a trunk show for me.  We invited a bunch of friends and they all came to support me.  I sold 60 pieces that day!  Chikahisa Studio was born shortly after that.

One of a Kind:  Who inspires you/your work?

Ann:  One of my biggest inspirations is Calder.  I am in awe of his creations--especially his jewelry.  He takes a simple piece of wire and makes the most amazing pieces!

One of a Kind:  If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

Ann:  Being an artist is not something you choose.  It chooses you!  It's in your heart and soul so there's no way to walk away.  Even though I didn't pursue being an artist until later, it was always a part of my life.  As a child, creating, painting and drawing were things I loved to do.  I feel very fortunate to connect with this part of me again.
